I have emBARKed on another adventure with Millie! This time we are in the greatest city in the world, the Big Apple. And boy does the Big Apple feel crowded with a big pup.
I like to think that the NYC housing gods smiled upon me and gifted me with a super reasonably priced sublet in an apartment on the Upper East Side. The rent is literally cheaper than my apartment in Miami by a significant amount. Of course I'm sharing with my good pal Emily, but we have a large basement bedroom with plenty of room for the three of us (Millie included, duh).
For a dog that spent the past 4-5 months living in a nice, relaxing suburban home with plenty of yard to run around in, Millie loves the city. Here are some of our favorite places, and if you want all the details definitely follow her instagram (@suitelifeofmillie):
1. The Subway
Starting with the basics. At first, Millie was absolutely petrified of the subway to the point where I literally had to lift up all 55 pounds of her and carry her into the car. I felt bad because it was definitely the roaring and screeching noises from the trains pulling into the stations, but my brave little baby has grown accustomed to it and now proudly trots on and off the subway. She even gets a handful of head scratches from time to time, plus tons of compliments on her good behavior.
2. Central Park (The Ramble)
Of course Central Park is a great spot to walk any pup, and Millie is no exception. SO MANY SMELLS. And squirrels to chase. And birds to scare. But her favorite part of the park is the area called the Ramble. If you aren't familiar, the Ramble is a shady, woodsy area of the gigantic park that feels super secluded and quiet, and makes you forget that you're in the middle of one of the biggest cities in the world. Of course all of the woodsy walking trails mean lots of wildlife for Millie to chase, and the shade is awesome for such a fluffy pup in the NYC summer heat.
3. Carl Schurz Park, Upper East Side
This is just one of many dog parks in the vast city, but the park itself is one of the prettiest in my opinion (it is the Upper East Side after all). It's really quiet, the landscaping is beautiful (picture hydrangeas and lots of other flowers) and is filled with nice areas to sit like stone staircases and plenty of benches. The dog park is a good size and Millie always finds friends to play with, and even though the footing is a stone-dust mixture and not grass, I really like the calm environment. The park is nestled right along the East River on 86th Street.
3. Washington Square Dog Park
One of the more popular dog parks in the city, Washington Square dog park is always busy. All times of the day pretty much. It's not my favorite dog park because it's a little too busy for me and Millie tends to get overwhelmed or ganged up on, and she's pretty submissive and shy at first. It's also in a pretty busy area so there's a lot of noise from the street and the park. It is a pretty good one though, and has plenty of shade and plenty of space for the dogs to run.
4. The Ollie Office
I am currently working as a Customer Experience Intern for a fresh dog food company called Ollie. Obviously the office is dog friendly and I get to bring Millie with me every day I work! She loves it because she gets to run around with other pups in the office and she gets spoiled with dozens of treats per day. It's seriously an awesome experience for her and I'm so lucky I get to bring her. Every office should let dogs in the office :)
5. Madison Square Dog Park
Okay yes basically this is a list of parks in New York, but hey that's where me and Millie go most of the time! This dog park is pretty similar to the others, and busy like Washington Square, but it's great because I can take Millie here on lunch breaks and let her get some energy out. I've met a couple of the regular dogs and dog moms and it's a pretty solid community, which I like.
6. 96th Street Esplanade/Randall's Island
Millie isn't super accustomed to going potty on the sidewalk yet, but luckily this bike/running trail/park thing along the river is perfect for her. She can go potty on the grassy area and we can walk or jog all along it for some exercise outside, and sometimes we even go down 20 blocks or so and cross the East River on the pedestrian bridge to get to Randall's Island. I love going here because it's green, grassy, and quiet. It's also really cool looking at the city from across the river, and it has great trails for running and biking. We both love it and it's super close to our apartment.
These are just the places we've been a bunch so far, but I'm sure in time we will see many more and I'll keep everyone updated on Millie's faves. Until then, we will be hanging out in the Big Apple pretending like we're stars on Sex and the City or Gossip Girl (or both).
