Losing Momentum

Another week in quarantine and not much has changed. Lucky for us, the weather has finally warmed up, so we’ve been able to spend a lot of time outside in our backyard, which has turned into a lot of day-drinking. What better way to pass the time, right?

Sadly, COVID-19 has directly affected our family this week, with the passing of my Grandma on Saturday night. She was a fighter and survived so many things in her very long lifetime, and we have lots of . It’s sad to say goodbye, but it’s comforting knowing that she’s now at peace. If there’s anything you can do for us, it would be to stay home, wear your mask, and avoid socializing. It’s a very scary virus and it took Grandma Betty too quickly.

Life isn’t all tragedy though, and it must go on. We have no idea how long this will last, so we might as well make the most of it. I have to say, starting happy hour at 11am isn’t such a bad idea.

Ali’s Book Club

I finally finished The Omnivore’s Dilemma and I’ve picked up a new book this week. Jane Austen in Scarsdale is a book written by a resident of Moorestown, and so far I find it very amusing. It’s all about the struggle of students getting into college and the crazy parents that come along with it. I’m only a little bit into it, but so far it’s a nice read. If you want to read along with me, let me know!

What’s Cooking in Quarantine?

As promised, I cooked a lasagna last week. I didn’t use a recipe and kind of winged the whole thing, but it turned out really good! We didn’t have any ricotta, and my family doesn’t like it anyway, but it was a super yummy version and I’m definitely going to have to do it again sometime.

I’ve lost my momentum in the cooking department but I’d love to get back into it. This week is the end of my chemistry class and then I just have a little bit more to do for microbiology and I’ll be free. And probably bored. So I’ll resume my creative cooking. I’ve been thinking about making fried ravioli with the frozen ravioli we have, so I’m looking forward to attempting that.

Other Hobbies to Pass the Time

As far as TV goes, I’ve finished a lot of my comfort shows and I started The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, which so far I’m loving. I think I only have one episode left of the whole series, I binged it so fast. It makes me want to go back to the 50’s just for the cute fashion. If only it weren’t so racist and sexist back then and it might be fun.

I’m still watching Narcos with Alex, but we’re on season 3, and, SPOILER ALERT, they kill Escobar at the end of season 2. So we’ve lost momentum and haven’t been watching as quickly as we were.

I’ve heard a lot of good things about Outer Banks, and I think I might watch that next. Once Alex and I finish Narcos I want to re-watch season 1 of Dark, which is a really suspenseful and intriguing German show. I watched the first season a while ago and when they came out with the second season I had trouble following because I had forgotten what had happened. It’s a very intricate show and can get confusing, but I highly recommend it. My suggestion is to watch it with English subtitles instead of the English-dubbed version.

I still haven’t gotten into crafting, but as I’ve said, the time has passed nicely while spending time outside. Yesterday I gave both of our dogs a bath, and they were not too happy about it. At least now they’re clean! We certainly miss taking Shelby to the groomers and I think she might miss it a little bit too, but Millie wishes we would just let her stay filthy all the time (of course). They weren’t the only ones to get groomed though: our hair clippers finally came in and our house is now operating as a part-time barber shop/beauty salon. I’ve now trimmed Linda’s hair and helped buzz Bob’s. If my whole nutritionist thing doesn’t work out, I guess I could always try hairdressing?

Because of social distancing, I haven’t really seen anyone other than my family until this week. Lauren and I took our dogs on a nice (socially distanced) walk last week, which was really nice for us and the dogs. I think Millie misses seeing other dog friends, and she was very happy to be accompanied by her buddy Lil Chef. We will definitely be doing it some more as the weather stays nice.

Bike riding is also a great way to get out and stay distanced from others while still having company and avoiding going stir crazy. Emily and I biked for a long time the other day and got a workout and a solid gossip session. Her birthday was Saturday and I brought a nice little birthday picnic over to her house so that we could celebrate. Quarantine or not, everyone deserves to get trashed on their birthday and in that respect, it was a success.

Hope everyone is continuing to stay safe and healthy, and I hope everyone is still taking this seriously. Please keep your distance and continue to stay home, even as states start to prematurely reopen. No one wants this to go on any longer than it has to.

Mazel of the Week:

Our beloved Anderson Cooper is a Dad!!! Linda noted that he hadn’t been on CNN in a few days, and the next thing I know, Andy Cohen is posting to congratulate the new father. Anderson is a favorite in our house, and I couldn’t be happier for him. I can’t wait for this to be over so that him and Andy can have adorable playdates with their kids.

Jackhole of the Week:

In classic American fashion, protesters have emerged to somehow protest the virus, which makes about zero sense. I don’t really know what they expect to come of their protests? They want the states to reopen so that thousands of people will be at risk and die just so they can get a haircut? I really can’t even put into words how stupid and idiotic that stance is, and it baffles me that they’re saying this shit with their whole chest, as if they’re red-blooded American-ness will be enough to stop a global pandemic. No surprise that the demographic of the protests is racist, gun-toting rednecks.
