Is BarkBox Worth the Hype?

If you’re a fellow dog parent like me, I’m almost positive that you’ve seen at least a few ads pop up on your feed from BarkBox. I get them constantly, and I’ve always been so intrigued by their fun themes, but it wasn’t until April of this year that I finally bit the bullet and ordered a subscription. If you’re like me and always wondered if the eye-catching products live up to the hype, keep on reading!

The April special toy caught my eye because it was a hilarious marijuana joint and it was too funny not to get. So I signed up for the 6 month subscription and eagerly awaited my first box. Our first month’s box was “Squeak Easy” themed, and came with a moonshine bottle plush toy and a spider character plush toy, plus two bags of premium treats and one bone. (Since I ordered with the special April offer, we got an extra plush toy in this box.)

This is the standard amount of items that comes in each box: 2 plush toys, 2 bags of treats, and a longer, bone-like treat/chew. So far, most of the toys have held up really well, considering Millie really loves tearing things apart. Some of the April toys are nearing exhaustion and I’ll have to throw them out before Millie rips them up too much, but they’ve lasted pretty long!

Our second month’s box was Scooby Doo themed, for a new Scooby movie that was coming out and I was PUMPED. I love the old cartoons, and I’ve always thought that Millie kind of looks like Scooby. The treats were also labeled as Scooby Snacks, which just made me even more excited.

The quality of the treats is also something I’m really impressed with. We’re usually buyers of the cheap Milkbone treats, so getting two bags of high quality treats each month is literally such a treat for our pups. With Shelby’s old age starting to show more by the day, her weak little teeth definitely appreciate the softer and meatier snacks from BarkBox.

The third month we received a fun French bistro themed box, where the two plush toys were a bottle of wine (“Cabernet Slobberon”) and a two-piece wheel of Brie cheese. Millie really loves how the toys are not only squeaky, but how they also feature crinkly material on the inside. It can be annoying as we work from home and Millie is constantly squeaking her toys, but overall I’m glad she’s nice and entertained.

I think the month that really sold me on this company was our July box. When we initially filled out Millie’s profile, we entered her birthdate (which is July 7th), and we were pleasantly surprised to find our July box was a big birthday box! They sent a little paper sign, a card, and birthday themed treats and toys. What blew us away was that one of the treat bags was called “Pizza Party”, and Millie’s favorite food happens to be pizza! It was adorable and we loved it all.

I have to say that if your dog likes toys and needs distractions, BarkBox is an awesome option. I know there are tons of other subscription boxes available for dogs out there, but the marketing and creative teams at BarkBox really go above and beyond to make all of their products high-quality and entertaining. I get a kick out of the puns they come up with and I love the commitment to each theme. The subscription we have is a reasonable $25/month, which is actually really good for everything you get. To buy all of it individually at the pet store would cost AT LEAST that much, and this is even better because they curate great stuff for you and your dog every single month.

Is BarkBox worth the hype? In my eyes, and Millie’s, we absolutely think so. Between the durable toys, the high-quality treats, and the creative genius in each and every box, there isn’t much more I could ask for. I most likely won’t keep the subscription past the 6 months, mostly because I still have half of our boxes stockpiled in the cabinet to replace toys as needed, but it was a great purchase and worth every cent. Seeing how excited Millie is to open our boxes each month really drives home how much we love this subscription, and sometime before October I’ll have to break it to her that we won’t be getting any more...that is, until I'm persuaded by another tempting ad of theirs!
