How to Travel During an Ongoing Global Pandemic

Don’t!

Seriously, if you’re from the US, where confirmed cases of COVID-19 are increasing by the tens of thousands EACH DAY, try not to travel if it isn’t essential. Luckily for citizens who live outside of the US, they are pretty much free to travel because their countries locked down properly and their cases are becoming more and more minimal by the day. If only we could be like them!

I hate that a pandemic that is killing thousands of people has become such a debated and politicized issue, but the core problem is that people don’t care enough about other people to try and keep them safe. We would all be a little better off if we cared a little more about our friends, family, and neighbors around us.

If you desperately feel the urge to get out and about, here are some ways to do it safely!

1. WEAR A MASK. OBVIOUSLY.

Going to the store, getting takeout, going shopping, or even going to the beach should all be instances where you put your mask on! There are so many people you could be exposed to that may infect you or become infected by you. A mask is such an easy way to help prevent the spread of this disease and at this point it should be a courtesy. Pretty much every time I leave my house, I’m wearing a mask, unless I’m walking my dogs in the morning where we rarely run into anyone else (and if we do, it’s greater than 6 feet apart). I even wore my mask to the beach last weekend and only took it off once I was in an area far enough away from everyone or in the water. It’s not that difficult to do!

2. Avoid Public Transportation

If you can help it, try to drive yourself anywhere you may be traveling to. I was able to escape up to Massachusetts at the beginning of summer, but I made sure to drive myself and stay safe during the whole trip. I know not everyone has access to a car or private transportation, but taking a crowded plane or a packed bus is not a smart move right now. The best way to guarantee your safety is to not put yourself in those situations!

3. Enjoy Your Distance

Instead of going to a crowded beach or an AMUSEMENT PARK (which I actually can’t believe are opening up already), go somewhere more serene and peaceful. I went down to Ocean City, Maryland last weekend and quickly discovered that the beach was a little too crowded for my comfort, so instead I tanned on the dock at our house. I went to the beach in the early morning and late afternoon to avoid crowds, and I honestly preferred the quiet. My advice is to do the same, and make the most of a more isolated vacation by taking in every calming second of peace and quiet.

Again, I completely understand that it’s hard to stay inside for 5 months straight, but this pandemic is far from over and we all have to be safe for each other’s sake! Stay home as much as possible! We will all be able to travel again eventually, just hang in there. :)
